Getting help
Help with Reading
Not everyone is confident with reading. About one in six UK adults struggles with it. So, if you feel that you have problems with reading, or you know someone who does, it can help to know that it is not unusual and you are not alone.
Can Got to Read help you?
We can help if you cannot read at all yet, or if you want to build your confidence. We do this by matching you with a friendly Got to Read volunteer for one-to-one support. You talk to the volunteer about what is important to you and what you would like to work on most. Each partnership is different and we can help wherever you are on your reading journey and tailor the support to your needs and wishes.
The sort of things we have been able to help with are:
Someone from Got to Read will arrange a chat to talk about your reading, what you struggle with and your reason for wanting help. They will then match you with one of our Got to Read volunteers.
Your volunteer will give you one-to-one, confidential support. You start by meeting for 6-8 weeks, once a week for up to an hour at a time. You agree with your volunteer what you will work on and if there is anything that you would like support to do, like completing application forms, a driving test or anything else that you want to achieve. Got to Read provides all books or materials that are needed. There are no charges or payments. We just ask that you let us know beforehand if you can not make a session.
Where will we meet?
Students and volunteers meet at our meeting space at 19 Tower Street, Ipswich.
Who are the volunteers?
Friendly, patient people who want to share their love of reading and can spend an hour a week with you. They have had training from Got to Read so they can help you in a way that suits you best.
What happens after 8 weeks?
During the first few weeks, you decide what you want to get from your meetings with your volunteer. You will keep looking at this together as you go along. After around 8 weeks, you might:
Please give us a call on M: 07528 147654 to arrange a friendly, informal chat. Then you can decide if you’d like to be matched with a volunteer.
